The Green Schools Initiative was founded in 2004 by parent-environmentalists who were shocked by how un-environmental their kids’ schools were and mobilized to improve the environmental health and ecological sustainability of schools in the U.S. We believe it is essential to protect children’s health – at school and in the world beyond school – and we work to catalyze and support “green” actions by kids, teachers, parents, and policymakers to:
* Eliminate toxics
* Use resources sustainably
* Create green spaces and buildings
* Serve healthy food, and teach stewardship

The Ross School is an independent, coeducational school whose mission in this era of monumental change is to prepare children for meaningful lives and leadership in the global community.
Traditionally, the educational environment has remained isolated from mainstream society; for example, up until recently, the most advanced technology in the classroom was the light bulb. Now digital technology is creating an interactivity which places the individual at the center of instantaneous global communication. This holds huge potential for education. At the Ross School, we are using technology to create a new kind of classroom that integrates our children into a whole world of teachers, scholars and international peers. In moving forward, we are interested in gleaning the best from the past while charting a course whose object is the future.

The Free School
For a long time our unofficial motto has been: "Never a dull moment, always a dull roar." But perhaps we should also borrow the Stork Family School in the Ukraine's motto, "First love, then teach." For we have always placed the greatest emphasis on the fostering of loving, caring relationships. Observant visitors frequently comment on how closely connected the students seem, how carefully they look out for each other. The visitors note the brightness in the kids' eyes, the spontaneous joy, the natural exuberance. This is how children appear who are secure in knowing they are loved, and who are free at all times to return that love.
